What's not to love about these cute little sweet and savory sausage sliders that use pretzel bites from your local grocer as a "bun" to bring together sausage, crisp apples and gouda cheese. Honey mustard provides some bite and apple jelly some sweet in an appetizer that is perfect for fall football games and entertaining.

These sausage sliders were created for a recipe contest sponsored by Cosmic Crisp® apples -- and garnered runner up honors -- and a fabulous box of bling and a stunning box of the most beautiful apples! I like using Pretzilla® Pretzel Bites because they are the perfect shape for creating a little bun. (Typically they are sold in the deli section.)
In fact, I used them to create another recipe on The Savory Tart. Little Smokie "Hot Dog" Pretzel Bites. Both would be perfect served at a casual gathering, but I can also see them served at a more formal gathering as a passed hors d'oeuvres for a bit of whimsy. As far as kielbasa goes, my go-to is from Chicagoland's Slotkowski Sausage Company and procured at my favorite Trader Joe's.
Serve the pretzel bite sliders with other appetizers found at The Savory Tart:
- Italian Quesadillas
- Hot Curried Artichoke and Crab Dip
- Queso Funded with Chorizo
- Pickled Shrimp
- Major Grey's Cheddar, Chutney and Bacon Dip
I think they are just a ton of fun to serve

Preheat oven to 275°F.
Heat olive oil In a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage slices and sauté until lightly browned.

Set up ingredients for assembly

Cut the pretzel bites in half

Spread honey mustard on each pretzel bite bottom.

Starting with pretzel bite bottom half, layer as follows:
Top the bottom pretzel bite with a slice of Gouda cheese

Followed by a ½ a slice of Cosmic Crisp apple

Top with a sausage round

Followed by another slice of gouda cheese

Top the gouda with an apple slice
Spread the top of each pretzel bite with apple jelly/jam or apple butter

Top each slider with pretzel bite top. Skewer with a toothpick or appetizer pick.

In an ovenproof glass casserole or baking dish with sides, stand skewered sliders upright. It’s ok if they are packed in.

Spritz the top of the pretzel bites lightly with water and sprinkle with sea salt if desired.
Cover with aluminum foil and warm in oven for 25 minutes. Serve warm.
Hint: After assembling these on the skewer, smoosh them down a little bit to create a flat bottom. This helps them stand up during baking and serving. You may also find it easier to thread the layers onto the skewer.

Equipment
- large skillet
- casserole dish or baking dish with sides
- 24 appetizer skewers or toothpicks

Storage
I assembled these the morning of the party.
And while these will store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, the apples will tend to yellow from exposure to air.
