IWhat’s not to love about melty gooey cheese with bacon? (Really…) This baked cheddar, bacon and mango chutney dip gets an unexpected sweet and slightly pungent punch from the addition of Major Grey’s mango chutney – perfectly complimented with a bit of curry.

Major Grey’s mango chutney is a staple condiment in Britain harking back to when India was a part of the British Empire where it was known at the “British Raj”. Legend has it that the chutney was created by a British officer named Grey and carted back to Europe as a preserve – along with all the other goodies provided by The East India Company.
Chutney was around long before that in Indian cuisine using ingredients as far ranging as carrots, radishes and squash. Mango chutney is the most well-known in the U.S. with common additions including raisins, onion and tamarind creating a complex spicy, sweet and savory spread
Several years ago, I was the North American brand manager for a line of British manufactured Indian food products marketed under the brand name “Sharwood’s” – it was then that chutney became a staple in my kitchen.
And while I have a soft spot for Sharwood’s, brands most commonly found in the U.S. include Cross & Blackwell and Patak’s. I also like Trader Joe’s Organic Sri Lanken Mango Chutney
